A new wedding ring
Wow, have we been busy lately, the shop is humming along making jewelry at a furious pace. Like this restyled wedding ring we delivered yesterday to one very happy customer. I think her eyes were shining as brightly as the diamonds in her new ring she was so excited. There’s something especially fulfilling about custom made jewelry that just cant be matched by picking something out of a case or a catalog.
These are a couple of CAD renderings generated in the process of zeroing in on what it is she was looking for. Actually these were versions two and three. We do what it takes to make sure you get what you want at Douglas Fine Jewelry.
It’s actually easy being green
We still love to make jewelry just for fun. And Elyse has loved frogs since she was a kid playing in the creeks of western Pennsylvania. James did most of the finish work and set the Ruby cabochon eyes in this pendant she designed and carved around a beautiful South Sea Pearl. The whole piece is about and inch long and cast in 14 karat green gold. I’m not sure how true the color will be on your monitor but you can sure see the difference between the pendant and the yellow gold chain. Come on in and take a closer look, it’s currently in the case and available for sale at $1,750 (chain priced separately)
And speaking of being green, all gold used here at Douglas Fine Jewelry is recycled.
Not available in stores anywhere
Here’s the ring that we posted as in progress yesterday. James set the center and the smaller accent stone yesterday afternoon.
The design wraps about 3/4 of the way around the ring. We tried to do the inlay with palladium originally, but found that it didn’t have quite the right properties to achieve what we were after, so we switched to fine silver. Pure silver is whiter than palladium and provides a better contrast to the yellow gold as well.
So bring us your ideas, traditional, contemporary or even crazy. We have the the creativity, the tools and the skills necessary to help you realize your vision.
At Douglas Fine Jewelry 90% or more of the gold we use is recycled. We either buy unwanted jewelry outright or we take it in trade to credit toward new jewelry.
Like this custom wedding ring we’re working on here. This ring will have a cold (no solder) metal to metal inlay. In the picture below I’m using a graver to cut the grove in the 14 karat yellow gold ring where the contrasting fine (pure) silver wire will be fitted. James will then set the customers diamond in the white gold bezel shown.
I’ll get better pictures up showing the details when the ring is finished in the next couple of days. For now you can get a little better look by clicking on the picture.
The package came via Fedex from Sri Lanka a couple of days ago.
We received two lots, one of rounds and one of Suzibelles, our two most popular cuts. The Suzibelles are for the most part near colorless stones but the round parcel has some beautiful reds and oranges! It will take a little while to get them graded and sorted out but look for these to be available in the store soon.
I talked to Mr. Azmi who runs the cutting business in Sri Lanka where our Oregon Sunstones are being cut (gotta love Skype) and he says the first batch of stones will be shipped in about a week. We sent about 4.5 lbs of rough in 13 parcels, 10 of which are pictured here.
We’ll be getting back two of the larger parcels, which are not in the picture, consisting of colored rounds and colorless suzibelle’s. Shortly after they arrive we’re going to offer them, and the rest of our Sunstone inventory, at a significant discount for one week.
Shipping from Sri Lanka will take about a week, and we’ll need a few days to sort out the order once it gets here, so we’re looking at early to mid July.
So keep an eye on our what’s new page and get ready for some great deals on an awesome selection of Oregon’s Official State Gem!
Simple Shiller
I’ve been having a lot of fun lately making minimalist Oregon Sunstone pendants. This stone is only partially polished with natural crystal surfaces left untouched on the back and sides. This, along with the copper shiller in this gem, makes this stone change appearance as it moves. The bail is forged from 14 karat white gold and fits into small indentations drilled into the sides of the stone. The whole piece ends up being as unique as a fingerprint.
Direct from the source
The reason Douglas Fine Jewelery has such an outstanding selection of Oregon Sunstone at such great prices is that we have our own mining claims in southeast Oregon near Plush. This is a picture from a recent trip to the claims where one of our mining partners is using heavy equipment to expose the load bearing layer under the ancient lava flows. It was a great weekend and we came back with about a pound and a half of rough Sunstone.
This was the big prize of the weekend. It’s an 86 carat piece of dense shiller from this side and it shows some color from the other side, mostly red with a hint of green around the edges. I’ll post more pictures of this stone after I get done cutting it.
Whenever you’re in Downtown Bend stop in and ask to see what’s new from the mine, looking is always free.
Have it your way
Here’s one we just finished for a client. We pulled a lot of tools out of the box for this one.
We used CAD/CAM to make the white gold center section for the marquise and the smaller bead set stones. More organic forms are better executed by hand so the rest of the model was carved by hand. All of the finishing, assembly and stone setting was of course done by hand.
The design was combination of our ideas and hers, incorporating elements from a family heirloom ring. The stones all came from the customers collection of older jewelery and the whole project was made more affordable since we treated all the scrap gold from the old jewelry like cash.
